After arriving back in Dublin yesterday morning after a nine hour layover, I had never been more relieved to be back home (temporary home anyways). I got back to UCD and headed straight to classes (I thankfully don't have any class on Monday, which allowed me to be gone longer!). Yesterday I was finally able to go out to UCD's research farms (Lyon's) for my practical in Animal Reproduction. For my practical we got to dissect the reproductive tract of a heifer. We looked at the ovaries and what stage they were in the reproductive cycle, it was so cool! Then we got to watch a ram collection and evaluate the semen under a microscope. It was so amazing to see the millions of tiny organisms in such a small sample. It was a long, productive day of learning and experiencing animal science in a different country!
Today, I spent most of the day working on homework and a research paper for Purdue before going on a run and then attending Irish Studies. In our class today, we learned about Irish folklore and the art of storytelling throughout history. The Irish Folklore Commission had collectors that traveled around the country recording these stories on ediphones years ago that now make up the Irish Folklore Collection held here at UCD. This is a huge part of Irish culture and heritage. The folklore and stories contain many of beliefs and traditions from many years throughout it.
I ended my day playing and teaching euchre to new friends. This made me feel especially at home because I'm used to playing so much in Indiana! It was a great way to end a long day. I always enjoying a good euchre game, listening to music, and enjoying time with people!
